The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Technology Law (CAITeL) was established under the aegis of Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, to foster high-quality research, policy discourse, and capacity building at the intersection of artificial intelligence, technology law, and digital governance.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way societies are governed, economies function, and rights are exercised. AI systems are today being deployed in public administration, judicial decision-making, healthcare, financial services, and law enforcement, often at a pace that outstrips existing legal frameworks. The resulting gaps in accountability, transparency, and rights protection pose serious challenges for democratic governance in India and across the world. CAITeL was established in direct response to these challenges.
The Centre, established under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Faizan Mustafa (Vice-Chancellor, CNLU), endeavours to bridge the gap between rapidly evolving AI technologies and the legal frameworks that must govern them. It facilitates meaningful dialogue among scholars, policymakers, technologists, industry professionals, and regulatory bodies. At CAITeL, our approach is grounded in the understanding that AI is fundamentally a legal, social, and constitutional phenomenon, one that demands the same academic rigour and public accountability that law has always brought to bear on the exercise of power.
The Centre strives to provide opportunities for students and research scholars to enhance their knowledge and research skills through conferences, workshops, capacity-building programs, and guest lectures on contemporary issues, in collaboration with Central and State statutory bodies, think tanks, law firms, technology companies, and national educational institutions.
CAITeL aims to provide a platform for research projects, academic workshops, faculty development programmes, and policy engagement, working towards the advancement of AI governance and technology law in India in a manner that is lawful, ethical, and in the service of the public good.
